First Friday with The Universal Sigh – Sunday Night Bluegrass Jam

Live Music Fans,

We had a wonderful time in our first musical collaboration in the Kiva at True Nature.  Christie Lenee was a perfect match for the night and she put on a masterful performance.  She showed why she earned the International Fingerstyle Championship and her music and spirit came through in the magical space.  And, on Friday Night we had a rock & roll blast with Sleepy Justice and a bunch of teen fans and parents.  Sweet night.

River Whyless put on a fantastic show last Thursday Night for a “packed like Sardines” night in the old byob music room.  No one seemed to mind being closer than comfort to their fellow fans and the band put on an incredible show with their sweet original songs.  Love the unique sounds and gorgeous vocals.  A great touring band that we love hosting.  Now, it’s on to the future.  Only as good as our next show, eh?  Trying hard to keep up the truly high quality acts we book. Hope you notice and, most importantly, take advantage of these sweet nights.  They are like shooting stars.

This week, we feature a very cool rock band from Athens, Georgia and a regular Sunday Night Jam.  Now, it’s up to you to leave the cold cabin and venture out to a warm, cozy old room with some hot live music.  Why not?

See you at the shows!!

The boys have made some great original live music in the little room in past shows and we dig their sound.  They put on a rockin live performance in the old space.  They are making a Western Slope tour with shows at The Eldo in the Butte and Fly Me To the Moon Saloon in Telluride.  Glad to be on the tour.  Check them out.  Here’s some words about the band.  Check out the site for more reasons to come out.

“Universal Sigh is a high-energy rock band based in Athens, Ga., a city renowned for a legendary music scene that has produced bands like R.E.M. and Widespread Panic.Universal Sigh will bring that Athens energy to Carbondale this Friday Night, at 8:30 p.m.  Pace’s brother, Jones Maynard (drums), and Austin Parker (bass and vocals) round out the versatile group of musicians, who count Radiohead, Snarky Puppy and Umphrey’s McGee among their influences.”

“The band’s 2016 album, “Atoms and Void,” and 2015 EP, “Resonance,” includes both lyrical tunes and instrumental jams and reveals a myriad of influences ranging from improvisational jazz to funk and progressive rock a la Pink Floyd. The Maynard brothers developed their talents as youngsters making music in their parents’ basement. In high school, Jones met Terry, and the two soon began playing together, laying the foundation for Universal Sigh.”

“Forming the band “was not terribly premeditated,” Terry laughed, recalling jam sessions with Jones and a bass player. The bass player booked a gig for the trio even though they didn’t have a band name. “We added Pace the night before.”  Eventually Terry and the Maynard brothers ended up attending college in Athens, where they met Parker and finally settled on a name. Thanks to the diverse music scene in Athens, Universal Sigh enjoys incredible opportunities for collaboration. “It’s not just bands in college,” said Pace.“There’s a cool jazz-jam scene – a community of people getting together and jamming on different nights. We end up collaborating with this community of musicians,” said Pace. “That’s a lot of fun.“Athens is so supportive for musicians,” he added. “There are so many types of bands. All of our friends are in bands. It’s an inspiring place to make music. We love it there.”

We are happy to continue supporting this long standing musical tradition in town.  This weekly musical gathering of local players started at Dos Gringos thanks to their generous musician owner, Nelson Oldham.  It went on for years in his shop and the regular players made some beautiful live music for the town.  It’s now been a couple of years since we started hosting the night and it is a great use of the space.  Hey, the rent’s already paid so why not offer a evening of wonderful live music crafted by some great local players with no charge?  And why not come out for an early evening of great sounds?  It’s more like a concert than a jam and it’s a chance to hear some cool songs made by your friends and neighbors.  Bring your voice and instrument and join in this welcoming night of 100% locally made music.  Why not?

Musically Yours,

Steve, Mary Margaret and Shannon
