Our good musical fortune continues this week with three sweet nights of entertainment planned just for you. We start off on Friday Night with an Austin singer/songwriter/theater actor with a gorgeous voice. It continues on Saturday Night with a hot six-piece band from the Front Range with a talented young front lady. Then, on Sunday Night we have an amazing singer/songwriter/banjo playing clogging musical force from Oakland with a friend who plays “body music“.
Here’s even more fantastic musicians who are coming a long ways to play for us. Why not come out and give them a warm welcome to our little artsy town? It always makes them play better.
See you at the shows!
FRIDAY NIGHT - APRIL 19TH - SUSANNE ABBOT - 8:30PM www.susanneabbott.com
Susanne has got all sorts of artistic talents and we get to hear the musical ones this week. She is based out of Austin, Texas, where she has lived for over a decade. During that time she has made some beautiful original music and played with some great musicians. She builds “textured aural and songwriting landscapes spanning pop, rock and folk.” Since arriving in Austin, she has recorded with Texas blues legend, Doyle Bramhall and shared the stage with Marcia Ball, Roscoe Beck, Darden Smith and many more.
She is also an award-winning regional theatre actor with the Zachary Scott Theatre Center. Susanne is a 5-time winner of the Austin Critics Table Award and has appeared in a rock opera, Hedwick and the Angry Inch and more.
“Her tight grip of rock, pop, blues and gospel performances ignited critics to praise her live shows and powerhouse vocals.” I bet she sounds really amazing in our little listening room; a great place to hear her. Come out and listen to this talented, soulful and dynamic artist. I’m looking forward to meeting her; you could be, too.
SATURDAY NIGHT - APRIL 20TH - BONNIE AND HER CLYDES - 8:30PM - www.bonnieandherclydes.com
Here comes a hot six-piece band from the Front Range that plays their own unique brand of music they call “Colorado Country”. Bonnie Sims is a 5’ tall, fireball of a front-lady who brings her engaging personality to her original brand of country music. And, she is bringing a bunch of very talented and experienced players to join in on the fun. Expect to hear all kinds of “country” influences ranging from Western Swing, Outlaw, honky-tonk, rockabilly and even the Bakersfield sound. But mainly it will be Bonnie and Taylor Sims “Colorado Country” sound. We love original music in the room.
Her hubby, Taylor, plays a hot electric guitar, sings up a storm with his lovely wife and also is part of the songwriting team. Nancy Steinberger plays a smoking fiddle and also sings. Michael Schenkleberg is on electric bass, Damon Smith keeps the beat going on drums and Chris Ramey adds the sweet sounds of a pedal steel guitar. This is a big-band sound coming to the little room which should be sweet.
Their first album got to #18 in Colorado Sounds’ Best of 2011 year end review; pretty good start for their first album. We will get to hear a little of their next album “Wrong Side Up” which they expect to release this summer.
SUNDAY NIGHT - APRIL 21ST - EVIE LADEN & KEITH TERRY - 8:30PM - www.evieladin.com
Sunday Nights can be sleepy in little old downtown Bonedale but it’s hard for me to turn away talented touring musicians because we have had some of our best shows on “off-nights”. Like recently with Carrie Rodriquez and Casey Driessen. So, please take the hint and check out this unique act and come out on a night that you might normally stay home. I’m willing to bet you will be glad you did.
So for this Sunday Night, we have a duo out of Oakland with an album “The Evie Laden Band” 2012 nominated as Americana Album of the Year by the Independent Music Awards. Cool. Evie is also the driving force with the popular band “The Stairwell Sisters” and we are lucky to catch her duo on her Southwestern tour.
“Her rich and smokey voice resembles Natalie Merchants’s and her songs are as fetching as Nanci Griffiths.” One talented musician.
“The polyrhythmic funk of Evie’s claw hammer banjo, resonant voice and rhythmic dance has been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Celtic Connection, Lincoln Center to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.”
Keith Terry will be with Evie on this duo tour. He plays bass, body music and provides vocals, too. “Body, bells, boxes, toys and more Keith approaches bass as tonal percussion and adds delightfully unusual elements to the show.” He is also the founder of the “International Body Music Festival.” Something new to me, for sure.
Here comes a unique hybrid of American folk artists in one show. Where else, right?
And remember, live music can put you in a good mood and even make you better looking. Really, it’s true. Give it a try.
Musically Yours,
Steve, Mary Margaret and Shannon
PS: Last Wednesday Night, we had a wonderful time with Tony Furtado and Luke Price. They started their day in Cedar City and were on KDNK with Alan Weaver by the afternoon. Tony then went over to the White Dog Gallery for his first art gallery opening where he also played some sweet acoustic music for those in the shop.
Not tired in the least, Tony and Luke went over to our music room and played two long and strong sets for us. It turns out that Luke is a 2-time national fiddle champ and he sounded amazing along with banjo/guitar champ, Tony. They put on a fantastic display of acoustic string skills and wowed the packed room. So nice to have Tony back in the room where he sounds so good. His vocals were so sweet; especially with Luke singing along. Like the Everly Brothers. Beautiful vocals that blended so nicely together. Loved it.
On Thursday Night, Po’Girl, Awna Teixeira, came back to the room for another visit. Her accordion playing and unique, gorgeous vocals sounded so sweet. Awna was enjoying her solo tour across the country and stopping every place she wanted to; not having to ask the rest of the band. She had some fans come over from the Front Range just for her show and she sounded sweet.
The week ended with a fantastic show with Dan Bern. This talented songwriter was in great spirits and put on a powerful display of his totally unique songs and guitar skills. Dan had a unique challenge for the audience at the end of the show by saying he would keep playing as long as the applause kept getting louder. The enthusiastic crowd of fans quickly figured that one out and we got five or six extra songs out of this musical genius. So nice to hear hits like “Marilyn Monroe” and some brand new lyrics. Great show; can’t wait until the next visit. Special talent.
