Live Music Fans,
We had four excellent nights of live music last week with The Dead Horses, Will Kimbrough, Edison and The Adam Ezra Band last night. We love hosting major league talent like that in the little byob music room. And our amazing musical fortunes continues this special Mtn. Fair Week with four more fantastic acts.
It’s the 47th annual Mtn. Fair in Sopris Park and, once again, they have booked some great live music at no charge to you. One of the best musical bargains of the year, for sure. And, this year we were able to book five very talented acts coming to Town to play the Fair. You just can’t miss with the talent we have this week. And, check out www.carbondalearts.com for more details on the Fair Lineup. If you can’t make the Fair in person you’re in luck that our sweet public radio station, KDNK will be live broadcasting the acts, too. What a town! We sure know how to put on a wonderful party for the valley. Come out and see!
But wait, there’s even more live music coming to town for the Fair. You can wander up Main Street and catch more musicians at the Marble Distillery, the Batch, the Black Nugget, Friendship Park and Beer Works. And that’s not all! We are happy to announce that there’s a great new restaurant coming to Main Street called “The Way Home”. It’s in the remodeled historic building that was a gourment restaurant called “689”; the address on Main Street and just across from the pool. They will be hosing live music in their back lot from 5pm to 10pm on Friday and Saturday with Wes Engstrom, Sleepy Justice, Tommy the Animal, Cody Jeffreys, Dave Taylor Trio and more. Our local music scene keeps getting better every year. Dig it!
See you at the shows!
THURSDAY NIGHT – JULY 26TH – MOORS & MCCUMBER – 8:30PM – www.moorsandmccumber.com
“Moors and McCumber create that rare chemistry that happens when two gifted singer- songwriters and multi-instrumentalists perfectly complement each other’s strengths, a modern day version of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
James Moors and Kort McCumber grew up in different places and listening to different kinds of music – classical, rock, bluegrass, you name it. But when they met ten years ago they knew they’d found something golden. Since then, they’ve been cultivating their wide-ranging musical influences in songs that delve into love and life through haunting lyrics, soaring harmonies, and dazzling instrumental proficiency. As Grammy award-winning producer Lloyd Maines puts it, “These guys should be playing every major festival in the country. They bring it all to the stage and deliver it in a big way.”
Kort and James first met in 2005 at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival Song School, an “inspirational place that’s all about developing your songwriting. People were swapping songs, and when it came around to James, he played one of his original songs. It was amazing, so partway through, I joined in on bouzouki and harmony vocals. Afterwards, we introduced ourselves, and not long after that, we decided to try performing together.”
They put on an amazing show in the little room; one not to be missed and the best way to get your ears warmed up for the Fair weekend. Here we go!
FRIDAY NIGHT – JULY 27TH – LIVER DOWN THE RIVER – 9PM – www.liverdowntheriver.com
“ a funkadelic hoedown that’ll send you into infinity … and beyond.” – DGO Mag
“From the high mountain river-valley of Durango Colorado comes a six piece band of musicians called Liver Down The River. The group has their roots in countless river floats, campfires, late night picking, and Colorado living. Since its creation in 2012, the band has strived to have nothing but a good time. Their unique sound and high energy performances have lead them to share the stage with the likes of The Infamous Stringdusters, Railroad Earth, The New Mastersounds, and Poor Man’s Whiskey, to name a few.
The band got their start in 2012 when Patrick Storen and Emily Winter met and started playing music together. A few common fiddle tunes and Grateful Dead numbers later, the two were ready to perform. Searching for the missing link, they enlisted the help of funk master and bass player Derek Abt. In time, young ”river ridin’ flat-pickin” Dylan Ruckel joined on guitar. With the addition of New Orleans native Cy Fontenot on drums and funky keys man Tyler Smith, the music comes to life.
The music is a blend of original and improvisational compositions that take the listener on a journey. Each member brings their own inspirations and elements to the sound. From the high peaks of bluegrass, the deepest pockets of the funk, and the outer reaches of space, a unique genre of music is created. Inspiration comes from the band’s collective adventures, love of nature, the following of the soul, and the drive to keep on moving on.
The band released their five track Liver Down The River EP on June 30th 2015. One year later on April 8th 2016, the band released their first full length album, Life You Love. On these tracks, Liver Down the River strives to capture the immense energy felt during the live shows, and to showcase each musician’s skills. Attempting to reflect the beautiful, yet powerful and expansive essence of the Colorado country, the inspiration comes truly… from living the life you love.
We are comprised of: Emily Winter – Violin, Vocals Derek Abt – Bass, Vocals Dylan Ruckel – Guitar, Vocals Patrick Storen – Mandolin, Vocals Tyler Smith – Keyboard Cy Fontenot – Drums”
SATURDAY NIGHT – JULY 28TH – GASOLINE LOLLIPOPS – 9PM – OPENING ACT: ISABELLA BETTS – www.gasolinelollipops.com
“Gasoline Lollipops is a Colorado band that combines the sincerity of dirt-floor folk with the energy and rebelliousness of punk. It’s an all-new incarnation of alt-country that’s both high energy and heartfelt, like the American highway’s soundtrack.
Denver Westword awarded Gasoline Lollipops “Best Country Artist” in 2016, and the group – which released the debut album Resurrection in February 2017 and followed it with Soul Mine just 11 months later – won the 2014, 2015 and 2017 Colorado Daily reader’s polls for “Best Boulder Band.”
The GasPops have shared stages with such respected artists as Lucero, Dale Watson, Todd Snider, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club and others. They’ve also been on the bills of numerous great live-music festivals, including Divide Festival; Salmonfest Alaska; NedFest; Bohemian Nights @ New West Fest; the Denver Post’s Underground Music Showcase; BrewGrass; YarmonyGrass; Higher Ground Music Festival; Westword Music Showcase; Empire Americana; FoCoMX; Frozen Dead Guy Days; and the highly anticipated Grandoozy Festival.
Isabella Betts is a 17 year old singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist from Boulder CO, with a new record coming out this summer of all original music. Recorded in Nashville TN and produced by Neilson Hubbard (Kim Richey, Mary Gauthier, Amy Speace). She has shared the stage with Amos Lee, Mary Gauthier, Chris Thile and more. Isabella will be attending Berklee College of Music in the fall. Another thing we love to do is give stage time to the next generation of musicians.
SUNDAY NIGHT – JULY 29TH – LEYLINE – 8PM – www.leylinemusic.com
“Luiz & Gabriel Esteves’s Leyline is a path to modern, experimental and alternative music made in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil .
For the first Leyline album Project One , released in 2001, Luiz invited his son Gabriel Esteves, who was only 14 at that time. In 2002, Luiz & Gabriel recorded What’s on the Way, with Luiz on vocals, keyboards, programming, bass, acoustic and electric guitars and Gabriel on the electric guitar. Karl Mooney from Dublin, Ireland, wrote some lyrics for Leyline music.
Just For Fun, the third album by Leyline, was released in 2003. Luiz Esteves & Gabriel Esteves had the collaboration of João de Deus (of Banda Makaloba), Taquinho Noronha and Karl Mooney.
